Two mermaids..

Cathedral Tattooing Co.

•November 15, 2010 • 1 Comment

I’ve been in a pretty serious transition since my last post. Eleventh St Tattoo has officially closed  and become a seemingly distant but very fond memory. We opened the doors at Cathedral Tattoo on September 25th 2010 and we have all been tattooing non-stop since. This is one of my feeble but semi-valid excuses for not updating this blog more. The new shop is located on 249 e 400 s in downtown Salt Lake City and is directly underneath Stoneground restaurant, it’s also right next door to Cafe D’bolla. Both of these establishments are second to none and we feel honored to have them as neighbors. Myself, Cj Fishburn, Troy Trujillo, and James Vincent make up the crew at Cathedral Tattoo. The doors open at 12 noon and we are open 7 days a week. The shop number is 801.355.9191, we all book appointments but are leaving room for walk-ins everyday. We are showcasing a collection of original vintage tattoo flash and acetate stencils from the 40′s-70′s, some of the artists in the collection are Sailor Jerry Collins, Owen Jensen, Lee Roy Minaugh, “Tiger” Bob Martinson, William Grimshaw  and “Tahiti” Felix Lynch, to name a few. This collection is constantly growing so I’ll do my best to post pictures and descriptions of any updates or additions. Here’s to the road ahead, so far it’s been sunny.

11th Street Tattoo is relocating as of September 15th.

Due to lack of updates and followers I am shutting this blog down… just kidding, I have a giant warehouse full of new pictures and stories . We are moving the shop this month, Luis, Jon, and Gailon will be moving to Yellow Rose Tattoo on 2040 s. 900 e. and Myself, CJ , and Troy will be moving to Cathedral Tattoo on 400 s. 249 e. So, to put down any weird rumors or trash talking right out of the gate, I am going to give you the whole sleazy story. Our landlord, Larry McColm of McColm Commercial Investments is a total butt pie and threw a scare tactic our way a couple of months back, saying he had another tattoo shop ready to move in when our lease is up- unless we wanted to renew it. So we decided to call his bluff and told him we would be out of the space by “blah blah” date. He promptly gave us the “Ohh, yeah about that…” reply. Although Eleventh Street  is easy on the eyes and in a great location we decided that we pay entirely too much money for the amount of bullshit he throws at us (no hot water, leaking roof, broken furnace). And, so began the search for a new location. We had some dispute over the area we wanted to move the shop. Some people wanted to move closer to Downtown and some people wanted to stay in the Sugarhouse area. As the weeks passed we exhausted pretty much every available prospect of a new location. During this time we all went through a number of changes in mindset as well as perspective and we ultimately decided to be in separate locations for no other reason than we felt like it was the right way to go. There is no drama, no bullshit and no crazy talk. The amount of mutual respect and love that I have from working with these people for the last ten years is so big that, your heads would explode if you tried to comprehend it. We are continuing to work together, only under separate roofs. I’m continuing to learn from my peers even though I won’t see them everyday and I can assure you that I’ll continue to be on their side no matter where I end up. This split is a step forward, not a step backward and I can assure you that it’s only the next chapter and not the final chapter. The 11th Street  shop information will remain intact for the next 12 months. We will be doing our best to keep everybody informed. Please check www.eleventhstreettattoo.com or call 801.467.4418 with any questions.  Yellow Rose Tattoo is now open and accepting walk-ins/ appointments. Cathedral Tattoo will open officially on September 24th, but we should be tattooing in there by September 15th. Thank you for your support.

Here are a few tattoos from the last week or so, I really like both of them. The third picture is a picture of me tattooing my friend Chris, he’s a gentleman and a scholar. Me even possessing a picture of myself is a gigantic rarity since I have such a crippling self image haha. Who knows, maybe I’ll stop posting pictures of the tattoos I do and only post pictures of me tattooing since that’s what is really important in this town. Boom, roasted. I was lucky enough to see this band Caspian a few weeks ago and I was totally blown away, if you get a chance to watch them you should definitely do that. Thanks for taking the time to look, I appreciate it.

I haven’t updated in a little while and apologize to the ten people that actually check this. I’m really going to try to update every other day or so. We’ll see if that really happens or not. Thanks for looking.

The Ghost of Tom Berg.

Since my last post I was lucky enough to go on a trip to New York City. We met up with professional traveler/beard grower and world renown piercer J Colby Smith. Colby, Mike and I braved the “red eye” flight and wound up with a cab driver named Park. That’s right, Park. He reminded me of the guy on Bloodsport that says “O.K. U.S.A.!” … what a loser. The French brothers were nice enough to let us stay with them and once we got settled in the three hours of airplane sleep seemed to be enough for us so we went to Manhattan to eat breakfast. I’m sure you don’t care about my trip so I’ll condense, Dunkin’ Donuts, Whole Foods, Union Square, Watched Antichrist, I didn’t get tattooed, saw Dan Higgs art show. Dan Higgs’ tattoo portfolio, Visited many tattoo shops, The Strand bookstore, Baltimore sucks, Ringworm was awesome, Gehenna was a joke, the first 30 minutes of “Waiting…”  once sometimes twice a day, Coty Densley launched a record label, Dave Moench has sideburns, and last but not least 5 consecutive days of  ”would you rather”. It was a great trip, here are some tattoos I’ve done recently and a white car that had it’s back window smashed out then fixed, and my dog. Thanks for looking.
